When you see a grandma in games, she’s usually not just a fragile old lady who retired many years ago from the labor force. Many are village leaders, political figures, and influential individuals with a great deal to offer in terms of quests and stories.

With this in mind, let’s take a look at some of the most memorable grandmas in video games who gave us excellent quests.

Rogue: Cyberpunk 2077

In a traditional sense, Rogue Amendiares isn’t exactly what you would call a grandmother, but she’s got the right age for it since she’s over 80. Don’t say it to her face, though: she’s one of Night City’s most powerful underground elders. She’s a legendary fixer who gives the protagonist, V, quests that involve infiltration, mercenary work, and a lot of explosions and shooting.

Impa: Zelda Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom

A notable fixture in both Zelda Switch games, Impa is the wise elder of Kakariko village. He quests tie directly into Zelda’s lore; she gives Link the quests to help him set foot into the main story in Breath of the Wild. Meanwhile, in Tears of the Kingdom, Link aids her investigation into mysterious markings across the new-look Hyrule.

Grandma Flexington: Borderlands 2

Grandma Flexington in Borderlands may not be in the base game, but she gives out a quest, aptly named “Grandma Flexington’s Story,” where you have to listen to her rambling to complete it. One of the most absurd quests in the game (considering Borderlands is known for its extreme eccentricities), you need to sit through her story before receiving her rewards.

If you think that’s mundane, don’t; she and her unbelievably massive biceps will no longer be around in the future, and you’ll definitely miss her stories.

Ethel: Baldur’s Gate 3

Undoubtedly one of the most memorable yet easy-to-miss side quests in Baldur’s Gate 3, Auntie Ethel appears to be a kindly woman who occasionally appears in the Emerald Grove and sells all sorts of potions, lotions, and sundries. However, she’s more than meets the eye: her true identity is that of a hag with a penchant for double-crossing those who seek her help. Her quests are horrific and almost always have consequences.

Granny Rags: Dishonored

Granny Rags, born Vera Moray, is a fallen aristocrat turned witch. In Dishonored, she gives Corvo side quests involving assassination, plague experiments, and supernatural favors. Her missions are memorable because they’re drenched in moral ambiguity; helping her often means spreading suffering, yet she rewards players with powerful runes. Granny Rags embodies the decay of Dunwall, showing how corruption and madness can twist even the city’s elders into dangerous figures.

We can’t take anything away from our real-life grandmas who love grandma games, but these video game grandmas are on a whole new level.
